What’s a First Look and the Importance of Having One?

For couples who got married, say 8 or 10 years ago, the concept of having a first look might seem like a strange thing to them. The first look then, which is the traditional style, was usually at the altar, where the couple had to wait until the ceremony before they could see each other for the first time. It was and remains the perfect way to keep the tradition intact.

In modern times, more couples are switching from the traditional style and opting for that special private moment where they first see each other, without onlookers, before the ceremony starts.

What’s a First Look?

A first look is where the bride and groom plan to see each other for the first time during their one-on-one photo session before the ceremony.

This is one of our favorite parts of wedding photography; it is where we get to capture all the candid emotions between the couple. You might think we are biased because we are photographers, but come to think of it, there’s joy in having a private emotional moment with your partner before the buzz of the ceremony takes all your attention.

We see the surprise in their eyes when they first set eyes on each other, and that’s enough to say no couple has ever regretted having a first look session.

Thinking of having a first look session or sticking to the traditional approach? We hope our reasons will help you consider cooperating this session into your wedding day photography.

Here are our top 5 reasons why you should consider having a First Look session

It calms your nerves

This is a great option to get some of the wedding jitters out. Wedding days can be nerve-racking and there’ll be a lot going on in your head - each wanting attention. Most of our clients are super nervous before the ceremony starts and we are always glad to see the relief on our couple’s faces when they see their significant other in a first look session. There’s a way it relaxes them; it’s almost like a burden is lifted off their shoulders. If you, like our clients, will feel nervous - which you’ll most likely be - having a first look session will calm your nerves. The joy of becoming one will make you feel at ease and you’ll be confident and ready to face the day’s activities.

It affords you some “me-time”

From my experience, I can say this is the only time you guys will have to be together on your wedding day without the anxiety and pressure that comes with a lot of watchful eyes all set on you both. This is your chance to enjoy each other’s company without distractions, and it’s perfect for a sweet romantic mood for your wedding portraits as well.

The truth is your wedding day will go so fast, you wouldn’t even notice it. Oftentimes, the first look session is the only time to get the camera focused on you, as friends and family will want to share their excitement and joy with you, and there’ll be a lot of activities and many things to be done.

For the freshest looks

One of the perks of having a first look session is the incredible looks you’ll get. That’s not to say you won’t look good during the rest of the day, but there’s a difference between when you have your first look immediately after getting dressed and when you walking down the aisle with some tears ruining your makeup, feeling nervous.

It’s why we always recommend having a first look: the bride’s makeup, hair, and dress will still be intact with no smudges or stains, and the groom will be looking dapper.

The surprise

We live for the stunned look on the groom’s face when he takes a turnaround for the first look, and the way the bride is instantly mesmerized when his eyes light up is super amazing. There is just something magical about that moment that words can’t describe enough. This is the couple’s moment and for a few minutes, nothing else matters. Nothing at all!

More photos

Who wouldn’t want more photos? No one. Having a first look before the ceremony allows for an extended time with more beautiful photos. You’ll be ahead of time and there’ll be no need to rush. You can take all the pictures you want with your partner and bridal party while having fun at it - you’re investing so much into your wedding photography, and it is our pleasure to see you get your money’s worth.

This is also our chance to get creative and create even more beautiful portraits of you both. We would go all out to ensure your photos are taken from different angles, even different locations if you want. We are always excited to do that and much more. We wouldn’t also waste time so you can be available for cocktail hour with your friends.

We hope you are convinced about the benefits of having a first look. As much as we love recommending a first look session to our clients, we want you to follow your heart. Your wedding day is a milestone, and we want you to love every bit of it without regrets. So whether you choose to see each other on the aisle first or earlier in a private moment, you can trust us to support you all the way.

It’s our joy to see you spend more time with your lovely guests and have fun while at it.
